Florence Levine Berman Opportunity Scholarship

The Northern Virginia Community College Educational Foundation and the Student Financial Aid Office are pleased to announce the availability of the Florence Levine Berman Opportunity Scholarship.

Established in honor of a life-long learner who was born during World War I and emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1933, the Florence Levine Berman Opportunity Scholarship provides funding to immigrants and first generation Americans to support their pursuit of higher education at NOVA. This scholarship award may be used for tuition, fees, and books.

The recipient will be chosen by NOVA’s scholarship selection committee.

To be eligible for the Florence Levine Berman Opportunity Scholarship, the following criteria must be met:

  • Must be an immigrant, child of an immigrant, or refugee and exhibit academic promise.
  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll at NOVA for the first time.
  • Must complete NOVA’s Scholarship Application and include a personal statement on financial need.

Eleanor Saslaw established this scholarship in 2014 in honor of her late mother, Florence Berman. Ms. Saslaw worked in Fairfax County Public Schools as a teacher, counselor, and director of student services.

She served as president of the Virginia Counselor’s Association and was a member of the Virginia State Board of Education from 2004 to 2012, serving as its president from 2010 to 2012. She is currently a member and immediate past chair of the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges and is the board liaison to the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education.
