Family and Friends of Steven Drasner Scholarship

The Northern Virginia Community College Educational Foundation and the College Financial Aid Office are pleased to announce the availability of Family & Friends of Steven Drasner Scholarship for the 2024 – 2025 academic year. Recipient must be enrolled full-time, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, have recently earned at least 15 credits, must have AS, AAS or CSC in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology or Information Systems Technology as your field of study, must have two written nominations focusing on how the applicant demonstrates the drive to attain his/her educational goals; one must be from a NOVA faculty member and must submit an essay explaining the importance of education, your educational path and your plan for meeting your educational goals.

Bio: Steven Drasner (1955-2017). This scholarship is one way for Steven’s life to be remembered and for many who did not get the chance to know him learn of his legacy. This scholarship demonstrates that Steven’s acts of love, generosity and kindness are repeated, that his sense of humor is preserved and that his zest for life and love of learning, travel, people, friends and family is carried forward.

Steven Drasner had many roles in his short life: he was a teacher, a learner, a sports enthusiast, a traveler, an explorer and most important, he was committed and dedicated to his family and friends leaving his impact on so many through his love, laughter and kindness. His reach was broad, his commitments deep and his love undying. Steven Drasner’s name was recognized and he was respected among so many different people who made up the many facets of his life.

Steven created “family” and community– he was the glue – he connected people, introduced people and planned events and vacations bringing his friends together as a community. He transcended race, religion, age, ethnicity and social status, finding new friends everywhere he went.

To quote the words of his closest friends in describing Steven is what our scholarship winners’ character should embody: In Yiddish, the word mensch is a high compliment given to someone of stellar character, someone who has a clear sense of what is right and what is good. Steve possessed all of these qualities, and all of our lives are so much richer because he was our friend.
